This
task is usually performed twice per year to provide clean,
streak-free exterior and interior glass.
In recent years, smoking has been prohibited within
office buildings and because of this the frequency of
cleaning interior glass can often be reduced to one time per
year or “as needed”.
There are two basic methods of squeegeeing
solution from glass. The
first method is called the "straight" method.
It is done with simple straight-line movements and is
a common method used by novice window cleaners.
There are many times when the straight method is the
only feasible method. It is typically used on narrow windows/glass.
The "fanning" method is utilized on large,
unobstructed window areas.
It is faster than the "straight" method.
Window
and Glass Cleaning Procedures, Straight
Method
•
Begin at the top left-hand corner of the window/glass
with the squeegee blade held perpendicular to the ground and
tilted at an angle so about two inches of rubber touches the
glass at the very top. Using
the squeegee blade tilted at this angle is called
"cutting the edge." Draw the tilted squeegee along
the top edge of the glass to the top right-hand corner. Remove
the squeegee and wipe the blade with a chamois or sponge.
•
Once
again, “cut the edge.”
Start at the top of the three-inch strip (with the
squeegee blade held parallel to the ground and the left two
inches of the squeegees blade touching the glass) and draw
down along the left edge of the window to the bottom. Wipe the squeegee blade with the chamois and start from the
now dry surface at the bottom left-hand corner.
Hold the squeegee perpendicular to the ground and draw
it across the bottom of the window/glass.
•
Use
the chamois cloth to wipe any remaining solution and soil
from the corners or framework to complete the job.

Window
and Glass Cleaning Procedures, Fanning Method
•
Begin
with the same first three steps as with the
"straight" method.
•
Starting
from the top right corner, draw the squeegee along the right
edge of the window to within three inches of the bottom. This
time, the left end of the squeegee blade should be higher than
the right end so that the water runs off the left end onto the
part of the window that still needs to be squeegeed.
•
Next,
begin on either the upper left or right side (it doesn't
matter which side, since both are now dry) and move the
squeegee back and forth across the glass from side to side in
one continuous motion working down to the bottom strip.
The top of the squeegee blade should be angled farther
forward in the direction it is headed than toward the bottom
of the squeegee blade. This
will ensure that the solution flows off of the squeegee blade and
onto the unsqueegeed area.
•
If any tape or residue remains on the window/glass
after coverage by the strip washer,
use
the razor scraper blade to remove it.
Always use a slicing motion to remove tape, drawing the
blade across at an angle.
This will prevent the glass from becoming scratched or
chipping the razor blade.
