Specialty Cleaning: Light Cleaning

To remove the dust and soil from light fixtures, bulbs, and lens covers, which is unsightly and reduces light reflectivity.

Wear chemical splash goggles, impermeable gloves, and other protective clothing or equipment, as necessary to prevent injury.

Place one walk-off mat under the fixture to be cleaned and two walk-off mats about 6 feet away from the fixture to be cleaned.  These mats should be used for placement of any bulbs to be cleaned.

TURN OFF ELECTRICITY. If this is not possible, tape all bulb sockets with electrical tape.

Set up the stepladder centering it over the walk-off mat under the fixture to be cleaned. Secure all locking devices on the ladder.  Follow OSHA Harness procedures

Mix a solution of General Purpose Cleaner in one side of the double bucket and a clean water rinse solution in the other side of the double bucket.

Dust all surfaces (interior and exterior) using a wiping cloth.

If it is necessary to remove the globe or lens cover, loosen the screws or latches while holding the bottom of the globe or lens cover with the other hand.  Remove all bulbs at this time (incandescent or fluorescent).  Use caution because incandescent bulbs may be hot.

Place globes/lens covers, bulbs on the walk-off mats that were placed 6' away from the area you are working.  Wash the globe/lens covers and cooled bulbs with a wiping cloth submerged in the General Purpose Cleaner (wring the cloth to avoid dripping).

Rinse the area with the clean water rinse solution and another wiping cloth (wring the cloth to avoid dripping).  Observe results.  If the items are not clean, repeat the procedure on another area using a stronger concentration of  General Purpose Cleaner.

Continue washing the globe/lens covers and cooled bulbs with the correct concentration of solution.

Rinse all surfaces with a clean damp wiping cloth and then dry with a clean dry wiping cloth, or allow to drip dry if time permits.

Clean the fixture with a wiping cloth (wring the cloth to avoid dripping and electrical shock), apply a General Purpose Cleaner to a one square foot section using a back and forth motion.

Rinse the one square foot section with the clean water rinse solution and wiping cloth (wring the cloth to avoid dripping and electrical shock).

Dry all surfaces with a clean dry wiping cloth, or allow to drip dry if time permits.

Remove all tape from electrical connections if the power was not turned off.  Replace all bulbs, globes, and lens covers.  Move ladder and walk-off mat to the next section of lights and repeat items 3 through 14.
